Team Member Spotlight: Rick Taylor — “The Oracle” of Marine Winches

From the moment he could pick up a wrench, Rick knew he was meant to be a mechanic. In fact, a 9th-grade teacher proved it—mailing him back an essay he’d written about his future, ten years later. His prediction? Almost exactly what he was doing at that moment.

After graduating from South Seattle Community College’s Heavy Duty Diesel Program in the mid-1980s, Rick joined the Alaska Boat Company, maintaining and rebuilding Detroit Diesel engines for their famous crabbing fleet—known as the “Dog Boats.” (Fun fact: The Retriever later appeared on Deadliest Catch!)

Eager to keep learning, Rick spent the next several years at Duncan Engine, earning many certifications while tearing down and rebuilding diesel engines. Then, in 1989, the Exxon Valdez oil spill called every Rasmussen winch into action. Rick joined the Rasmussen team on loan from Duncan as a subcontractor, helping rebuild winches to support cleanup operations. That experience sparked something lasting—he knew he wanted to be part of the Rasmussen Team for good.

By 1993, Rick officially joined the team. He learned from the “lifers” of the marine winch world—mentors whose lessons he still carries with gratitude today. Over the years, he became a key player in building Rasmussen’s renowned Hydraulic Power Units (HPUs) that power Pullmaster and Lantec winches in the Rasmussen Rental Fleet. His craftsmanship and problem-solving skills helped set the standard for the company’s hydraulic systems.

In 2008, Rick took on a new challenge as Shop Foreman. A natural “gear-head” and lifelong learner, he quickly became the go-to expert for customers, team members, and vendors alike. New team members will often find him to ask, “Hey Rick, I need help. Can I bug you real quick?” His consistent reply: “Stop it… I’m here for you! You’re not bugging me at all. What can I do for you?”

Rick’s pride in his work shows everywhere you look—his clean, organized shop, the precision of his builds, and the respect he’s earned from his peers. Outside of work, that same drive carries into his personal life. He and his wife of 35 years are avid cyclists, tackling Century Rides like Seattle-to-Portland and loops around Mt. Rainier. They share their home with two dogs and recently welcomed a grandson—Rick’s newest and proudest “project.”

Rick’s secret to success: Take pride in hard work, stay organized, and seek knowledge and growth.

His advice for the next generation: “Show up. Do what you say you’ll do. Be humble. Listen and learn from those with experience. Don’t just say you’re driven—prove it.” Rick embodies the Rasmussen legacy—builders, problem-solvers, teachers, and people who care deeply about the quality of their work, the customers they serve, and the team they’re proud to be part of.
