We extend our sincere gratitude to Caldwell Marine International, a JAG Company, for welcoming MES on-site to document their cable-laying operations for the Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) project. This dedicated team has been working tirelessly to advance this monumental initiative, and it’s truly inspiring to witness their commitment and teamwork in action.

The CHPE project is a significant endeavor, comprising two high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cables and a fiber optic line designed to deliver clean hydropower from Hydro-Québec to Manhattan. Spanning 96 miles across Lake Champlain, the installation process involved a combination of surface lay and trenching techniques. The lake phase alone took one year to complete, contributing to the overall 14-year development timeline. The system is owned by CHPE, with NKT serving as the cable manufacturer and general contractor, and Caldwell Marine International acting as one of NKT’s key subcontractors. Testing is currently underway, with commissioning targeted for May 2026.
Our partnership with Caldwell Marine International dates back to 2015, when Poseidon began discussions with them regarding the use of sectional barges for this project. This long-standing collaboration underscores our commitment to being involved in the planning stages and providing continuous support throughout the project’s lifecycle. We are proud to be part of this transformative project, and look forward to continuing our partnership with Caldwell Marine International in the years to come.
